Translation: Ivana Peruško

Bulgakov achieved posthumous fame as a prose writer, above all thanks to the aforementioned “The Master and Margarita”, yet one must not forget that he began his literary career as a dramatist. He was also involved in theatre direction, wrote theatre criticism and feuilletons, and it is therefore not surprising that Molière was one of the most important figures to shape his work. Bulgakov turned to him after his own plays, staged at the Moscow Art Theatre (MAT), were pulled from the repertoire one after another and branded unsuitable and scandalous. It all began, of course, with his drama “The Days of the Turbins”, staged in October 1926, which Sta lin himself supposedly watched fifteen times, but which was met with extremely negative reactions from Soviet critics and, despite public interest, was very quickly removed from the program.

That was only the overture to everything that would follow with Bulgakov’s other plays, as well as his prose works, and his fascination with Molière can be understood both as admiration for the genius Molière displayed in his works and as an explo ration of an artist who was likewise in conflict with the authorities and likewise endured numerous bans. Bulga kov also shared with him an immense love of theatre, and from that love there ultimately emerged this vivid and authentic portrait of one of the greatest French satirists of the seventeenth century.

And no one but one of the greatest Russian satirists of the twentieth century could have written it. One of the most beautiful and fascinat ing features of Bulgakov’s writing, which comes through strongly in “The Life of Monsieur de Molière”, is his masterful narration, which seems to breathe life into every page he ever wrote.

His nar rator, who reveals the life of this French genius to readers, constantly shows a penchant for irony, side comments, and various lively, playful observations, but above all he shows affection for his protagonist, often sympathizing with him and openly and sincerely praising him already in the prologue, where he tries to explain to a French midwife what kind of child is about to come into the world:

“This infant will become more famous than your reigning King, Louis XIII; he will become more famous than your next king, and that king, madam, will be called Louis the Great or the Sun King! My good lady, there is a distant land, unknown to you, which is called Muscovy. It is inhabited by people who speak a language strange to your ear. And before long the words of him you are helping into the world will reach this land.”

Although Bulgakov wrote “The Life of Monsieur de Molière” on commission for the series “Lives of Remark able People” published by Zhurgaz, and researched a whole range of historical and biographical books for the purpose, the editor Alexander Tykhonov rejected the manuscript and, in a letter, asked Bulgakov to revise it thoroughly. His main objection concerned precisely the narrator, whose style did not fit at all within the confines of the literature considered acceptable during those fateful 1930s.

Bulgakov, who in earlier works had even been willing to make certain concessions, refused this time to revise the novel and decided to bury it and forget it had ever existed. His portrait of the great comic playwright waited almost thirty years for its first, censored publication, and was published in full only in 1966.

Bulgakov did not live to see it, just as he did not live to see the publication of “The Master and Margarita”. Thus, his finest works remained entirely hidden during his lifetime, and Bulgakov died not knowing what fame awaited him, nor to what corners of the world his words would one day travel.

The Master and Margarita, Mikhail Bulgakov, Šareni dućan. Translation: Vida Flaker

Genius in literature, but also a life filled with struggle for basic existence and against the constant oppression of authority, is another of the threads connecting Bulgakov and Molière. His hero – maestro, as Bulgakov, not by accident, calls him (in the prologue he even addresses him with the words, “But you, my poor and bloodied master!”) – dies choking on his own blood, utterly exhausted by all the troubles he had to endure throughout his life, and at the very end even he no longer understands what meaning such a life can have, a life in which a person is entirely stripped of pleasure and joy. Something similar happened to Bulgakov himself, who more than once tried to persuade the Soviet authorities to allow him to leave the country (in 1930 he even sent them a long letter, after which there followed a painful and disappointing phone conversation with Stalin himself), but that request was never granted, and in the end he himself wrote that a “painful misfor tune” had befallen him.

It is precisely after this event that “The Master and Margarita” introduces the theme of the relationship between the artist and authority, embodied in the figure of the Master, which marks a major shift from the earlier drafts of the novel. It is also then that “The Life of Monsieur de Molière” comes into being, whose protagonist shares Bulgakov’s fate and becomes a kind of ally in all the horrors he faces, but also someone who, despite every hardship, succeeded in revealing the greatness of his gift. If for Bulgakov the notion of a writer sig nifies an earthly person, often mediocre in his work, then the notion of a master is what anyone engaged in literature ought to aspire to, for it represents the highest form of artist: someone beyond earthly categories, someone whose genius knows no bounds, someone who deserves immortality.

“The Life of Monsieur de Molière” may therefore most simply be described as a novel one master dedicated to another master, one he was not destined to see in life, but whose works he knew well and came to love, and whom he therefore described in the finest detail, with astonishing respect and admi ration, and with a great deal of compassion.

It is painful to think about the fates of these two masters, but the fact that their words ultimately found their way to readers and became an indispensable and irreplaceable part of world literature ought to fill everyone with indescriba ble happiness and pride. With Bulgakov’s novel about Molière, as with his novel about the devil, it once seemed as though they had been laid away in literary tombs and would never come to life.

And how can one now say that Woland was not right when, addressing the Master who had by then already lost all hope, he said that “man uscripts don’t burn”? This new edition of this superb novel about the incomparable Molière is yet another proof of that, proof that great literature can outlive all the pressures of authority and all the laws of this world, becoming something wholly transcendent, exalted, and absolutely timeless.

It is an extraordinary privilege to live in a time when the works of Mikhail Bulgakov, one of the greatest yet also most heavily censored Russian writers and dram atists, are fully available to us, when we can read them day after day and marvel daily at his literary greatness.
